I was adopted at 5 years old. We lived in West Seattle, Washington. Until I was five, I lived in orphanages and was moved from one foster home to another. I remember very little, but there are memories for sure. Life started fairly normal at first. I felt cared for and was happy. Some semblance of stability was developing in my life. It's always hard to talk about the progression of abuse. It started with verbal put-downs, then turned physical. Once the physical started, it escalated rapidly and continued into my teens. I was a twin. My brother and two sisters from the same family were adopted together. That made me thankful. The abuse formed bitterness and psychological detriment in my behavior, which took most of my life to understand and overcome. With God's grace and much prayer, I remained kind, thoughtful, and determined to succeed. Every day I was told that I would not be successful. I was taught that my best hope in life was to strive to be a donut maker. It hurt. I would hear the words, but I pretty much planned for that not to be my future. There were beatings, torture, and a loneliness that I got used to. As I matured, I would read the room for a time, then I would speak my thoughts. That seemed to work. Feel free to respond with your stories. I want to hear. Thank you, Author Shawn Norton
